Day 18 - Your beliefs.
wow, so this is a bit of a broad spectrum, no?
if you see a need, fill it.
there's so much in my life that could not have been possible without the help of others. instead of subscribing to the typical american sense of entitlement, i've decided to "pay it forward." whenever i find myself in a position that i can help, i try to. be it something as small as holding a door open for someone or as large as giving an entire paycheck to a cause i believe in. i feel like there's plenty in this world to go around, but people don't feel the need to share. i'm not one of those people. i'd give you the shirt off my back if i didn't have such hideous surgery scars, and even then - if you needed it more than me, it'd be yours. people have done this for me and asked nothing in return, so in return, i'm continuing what i learned from them. it was a humbling moment when i stopped being selfish and started realizing how far i'd come thanks to the endless kindness of others, and that taught me a very valuable life lesson that i will never forget.
you aren't entitled to shit.
there's nothing that infuriates me more than people with a smug sense of entitlement. i don't give a rat's ass what you've been through, if you're demanding things and taking solace in depriving others of essential needs because you feel you're entitled to it, you are a piece of shit in my book. this doesn't include basic rights of course, everyone is entitled to things like free speech, health care (wow, there's a concept), air, yanno, that kind of stuff. past that, you aren't entitled to shit, you've gotta earn it just like the rest of us. we're a nation of spoiled brats, and i've grown quite weary of that fact.
own up to your bullshit.
this is another major pet-peeve of mine. people who are not willing to accept the fact that they are at fault for anything. i cannot stand when people have 49386376512 excuses as to why things happened the way they did, or why things are the way they are. joey used to always blame george bush for the fact that he couldn't find a job, and found solace in that. no, dear, you couldn't find a job because you sat on your ass playing call of duty all day. or people that blame their drug use on other people. my mom used to say she only drank because of me. no, mother, you drank because you were an addict. the more convoluted your excuse for something, the less likely you are to take any action to change it. by changing your locus of control to an external source, you're relieving yourself of the responsibility of handling it and allowing yourself to continue whatever destructive pattern it is. its difficult to be honest with yourself and sometimes its down-right painful, but if you continue to self-handicap nothing is resolved, nothing is gained and you allow yourself to be a lazy twat.
fuck "better them than me" mentality.
this is another thing rampant in our society that sickens me. "better them than me." i mean, is that supposed to make me feel better? are you that disconnected from emotion that you take solace in someone else's suffering? well good for you, you miserable fuck, that you have to proclaim to the world how much better you are than everyone else by being disconnected and flaunting how awesome you are. now what happens when something terrible happens to you, and everyone says "better them than me?" while you whine for sympathy, how the atrocities of the world have all come down upon you, don't come to me. better you than me (obviously this is a sarcastic joke)...
being contrary for the sake of being contrary: STOP IT.
i'm all for a little devil's advocate action, it makes you open your mind up a little bit and consider "am i really correct on this?" but i have so much contempt for people who embrace stupid shit just to be contrary, and will argue to the death over it. if that's the only way you can make yourself feel better than other people, your life must be pretty freaking pathetic. that's like if everyone is eating shrimp, but you choose to eat rat poison just to be different. good job buddy, you'll have a pretty intense trip, then freaking DIE.
treat other people the way you want to be treated.
if you were behind a counter ringing register, would you want an item thrown at your head? no? THEN DON'T DO IT TO OTHER PEOPLE. would you want people talking about how giant your ass is behind your back? no? THEN DON'T DO IT TO OTHER PEOPLE. its a pretty simple notion, and i believe if everyone lived by this, that the world would be a much better place. people don't realize how mean and hurtful some of the things they do and say can be, but when it happens to them its the most horrible and terrible thing to happen anywhere ever. it doesn't take to terribly much forethought to *not* do something prickish, just more forethought that the average american is willing to give.
for the love of god, fucking compromise already!
i hate this "if i can't have my way 100% then no one can" train of thought. just look at our government, they're so busy focusing on who wins that they've lost sight of who they serve, and since they're the ones in power, we're all fucked. i think 90% of arguments could be solved with compromise. i'm sometimes not very good at it, but i eventually come around and realize that its better to work with someone than to just be locked in an argument. people are so focused on who wins and loses that they don't even give a shit about the ultimate outcome, and that's bullshit.
no matter how bad it is - it can always be worse.
pretty self explanatory. sometimes its of little solace, but its something to keep in the back of your mind when the whole world is falling apart around you.
alright, that's more than enough.
